Jankovac and Glassmakers in Papuk

Jankovac and Glassmakers in Papuk

In 19th century, beech forests on Papuk were a home to numerous glass factories, which has been testified until today by the three remaining monuments in the glassmakers’ cemetery above the mountain hut. Since Papuk abounds with beech ashes, quartz sand and limestone necessary for the production of glass, glassmakers from Czechia, Germany, Austria and Hungary came to Jankovac thus becoming the first inhabitants of the valley. There they built their town, master workshops, warehouses, a chapel and a cemetery where Romeo and Juliet from Papuk are also buried.
